Why is the Havanese the correct breed for you?
Is there a fenced yard or other suitable pen for your Havanese?
Keep in mind that a Havanese is a house dog and should not be left outside alone even if you do have a fence.
Havanese Club of America:
Do you know someone with a Havanese?
Have you "met" a Havanese?
Do you have children / grandchildren who will be able to play with this dog? How many? What ages:
Is anyone in your family allergic to pets?
Havanese are considered hypo-allergenic; and while most people with allergies do well with Havanese, a few do have allergic reactions. Anyone coming to our home should remember that we also have German Shepherd Dogs.
Who will be the primary caregiver?
Where will the puppy be kept during the day? and at night?
We recommend that your Havanese be at least in the same room as you are most of the time, and that your Havanese sleep in a crate in your bedroom at night.
On average, how much time will you have with your Havanese each day?
On average, how much time will the puppy be left alone each day?
Will someone be available to feed / exercise the puppy during the day if you are not home? Who?
What will you do with the puppy/dog when you go away on trips?
Havanese do not do well in a kennel enviornment.
Have you ever owned a dog before? Tell me a little about him/her......
Have you ever given away or turned a pet over to a shelter or pound? Under what circumstances?
Do you currently own any other pets? How many? Please tell us a little about him/her/them......
Will this be your first dog in a long time?
Have you housetrained a dog before?
If you have not, or you need a refresher course, please let us know.
Do you plan on any training classes? What type?
We recommend basic obedience training and puppy socialization. Classes can begin any time after they have received their second puppy vaccination. Be sure the trainer uses positive reinforcement training!
Do you primarily want a loving companion, or do your interests include Conformation, Agility, Obedience, Therapy work, etc.?
Who is, or is going to be, your veterinarian? If you already have a veterinarian, please give name, address and phone number so we can contact him/her for a reference.
Are you aware of the grooming requirements for the Havanese? Do you enjoy brushing enough to commit to spending 15-30 minutes at least every other day to maintaining a Havanese coat?
Are you going to take your dog to a groomer? Do you have a groomer selected?
Please be very careful in selecting a groomer. A poor groomer can do a lot of damage to your Havanese - not just the coat, but both physically and mentally.
Do you intend to breed this dog?
If the answer is yes, unless you are a show person who I know well, you may as well look for another breeder as I do not generally allow my dogs to be bred. My contract does not allow breeding, and I will prosecute to retrieve the dog and any puppies produced by that dog. You cannot register any puppies from this dog. My puppies are sold on limited registration. This means that this dog cannot be shown in conformation classes, but may still compete in any other AKC event.
Are you willing to sign a spay/neuter contract?
Again, I do not allow my dogs to be bred.
Will you agree to have your Havanese' eyes checked for cataracts annually and registered with CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) until it is 8 years old?
We reserve the right to an in-home visit some time in the first year. Is this agreeable with you?
Please understand that for the life of this dog, we, as the breeders, have the responsibility to ensure good quality of life for this animal. And therefore, if for any reason you are unable to keep this dog, we must be contacted immediately. Even if you have located a suitable home for this dog, we must be notified and given the opportunity to ensure this will be a suitable home or the dog must be returned to us.
I understand and agree with the following paragraph.
I do not agree with the above paragraph because......
Do you have any preferences as to sex or color (explain)?
What questions do you have for us?
